Place-Based Education at Salmon Creek SchoolPlace-based education is
a process of using the local community and environment as a starting point to
teach concepts in language arts, mathematics, social studies, science and other
subjects across the curriculum. Emphasizing hands-on, real-world learning
experiences, this approach to education increases academic achievement, helps
students develop stronger ties to their community, enhances students
appreciation for the natural world and creates a heightened commitment to
serving as active, contributing citizens.”
Antioch University professor David Sobel, author of Place-Based Education
What a place it is - bordering the Salmon Creek Watershed in western Sonoma County, California, our learning environment offers
an incredible unspoiled 50 acres of fragile coastal ecosystem. Including unique
and representative wildlife habitat, recovering redwood forest,
natural meadow and wetlands, a creek, and a nature
trail, Salmon Creek School is ideally situated. In support of Place-Based Learning, our students tend a working organic garden that supplies the school cafeteria, operate and learn from an on-campus recycling and composting program, and collect watershed data to improve and preserve our wetlands.
