6th Grade

A look at the life of a 6th Grader
By: Armando Bautista

Every day, 6th graders look forward to their daily schedule of six periods. First, they start out with their first period, which is Humanities with Merry Humphreys. In this period the sixth graders learn about history. Right now they have started to study ancient Greece and have finished studying ancient China. Each kid needs to have a notebook where they keep their reading notes and the vocabulary. Each day they learn about a different place or an important event, for example, the Silk Road in China. Every Friday students are quized on what they have studied throughout the week.

Second period, the 6th graders go to Language Arts, which is also with  Merry Humphreys. In this class they spend most of their time on stuff like reading and writing. Sometimes they do one after another, like, after they read a story, they would have to write a summary of about two to three paragraphs of the story. They sometimes read books in class that they have been assigned in class like The Cay, Dear Mr. Henshaw, Iqbal, Lyddie, The White Mountains, and The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm.

The 6th grader’s third period is Physical Education, with Scott Marsh their favorite period of the day. In this class, the 6th graders do stretches, runs, and many different sports that they enjoy. Stretches include forward straddles, side straddles, shoulder stretches, and push-ups. After that, they do a four-minute run, and on Fridays they do an eight-minute run. Then, when they finish all of that, they start to play a sport like indoor soccer, basketball, dodge ball, prison ball, tennis baseball, or flag football.

Their fourth period of the day is Math with Ted Richardson. Every two weeks they learn something different from what they have been learning two weeks before, and then they have a test on it. Right now they are learning how to measure shape’s perimeter and area. Each week they have two pages of math in their workbook for homework, sometimes they can work on their homework in class. The 6th graders also need a notebook so they can take notes on stuff that they are studying, and the notebooks also help them do math problems, and different kinds of worksheets that they have been assigned, and they can use the notebook sometimes for tests.

Fifth period is Science with Mike Heffernon. In science, they have learned many things related to Earth’s geography and affects. For this class kids also need a notebook so they can write notes in it for when they have a test their notes can help them on a question or problem that they have. They also have a California science textbook that they have been assigned by numbers to take home and help them on their homework and to study for tests too.

The last period of the day that the 6th graders have at the end of the day is enrichment. Some of the 6th graders have different enrichments then some others. About half of the 6th grade class, have journalism, a third of the 6th grade class has leadership and the other third has study hall. Every twelve weeks the 6th graders change enrichment.
